The quality of the photographs, when printed out, is good enough for certain kinds of desktop publishing - headshots in a company newsletter, say. You can choose various file formats, including TIFF, JPG, BMP and PCX. The default file name looks something like "AUG2201" - the month and day, an underline and the number of the photograph. You can select some, or all, then save them to disk. It takes a moment or so for the Windows FotoMan software to establish a connection with the camera and then to show thumbnails of the pictures you've taken. This brings up my one complaint - if you have an external modem, you'll have to disconnect it to download photographs. Once you're done shooting, you insert the camera into the base, then connect the AC adapter and serial cable. It will hold 32 pictures and beeps twice to tell you if a picture is too dark, six times to tell you there are six pictures left, five times to tell you there are five left, etc. After you've taken a picture, the camera beeps when it's ready again. ![]() The shutter button doesn't give the satisfying click you get from a film camera, but you get used to that. Logitech rates the built-in flash as good from three to eight feet. There's no film, of course, but the camera's sensitivity is equivalent to ASA 200, or ASA 25 with the included neutral density filter. The fixed-focus lens, equivalent to a 64mm lens, allows a shooting range of three feet to infinity. After making sure the camera is charged, you simply point and shoot. It comes with its own charger base and stand and an AC adapter, as well as a serial cable for transferring photographs to the computer and other extras. ![]() To use the camera, you must first charge it for at least 30 minutes and up to six hours for a full charge. The FotoMan Plus, available in Windows and Macintosh versions, is about the size of a large remote control and powered by rechargeable batteries. Logitech Inc.'s FotoMan Plus, the updated version of its digital camera, is computer equipment as it ought to be - easy to install and easy to use.
